Zibrant chosen to deliver 2014 ITM Conference

Award winning venue finding and events agency Zibrant has announced that it has secured a contract with the Institute of Travel & Meetings (ITM) and will play a significant role in planning the 2014 ITM Conference due to take place in May next year.

Following a competitive tender process, Zibrant was selected to co-ordinate aspects of the conference ranging from event logistics to delegate registration.

The ITM Conference is an annual forum providing opportunity for those within the business travel industry to listen to top industry experts, learn about new products and innovations and network with others in the field. The theme for next year’s ITM Conference is Intelligent Futures.

Announcing the appointment, Head of Sales & Marketing for ITM, Diane Steed, praised Zibrant’s winning bid. “Our annual conference is a highlight in the UK business travel and meetings calendar. We pride ourselves on staging an event that meets the educational and networking needs of business travel and meetings buyers, and that means we work with organisations that can demonstrate creativity, attention to detail and – above all – value for money. Working with Zibrant will bring a fresh new approach and expertise that we were looking for to develop the conference and take it to the next level.”

The 2014 event marks the conferences 42nd year, and is expected to draw in over 350 business travel experts including travel and meetings buyers, third party travel relationship managers and suppliers of business travel or meetings products and services

In 2014, the ITM Conference will take place at the five-star Celtic Manor Resort, South Wales, between the 12th and 14th of May.

Anthony Coyle-Dowling, Global Sales Director at Zibrant, commented: “After a number of years spent enjoying the experience at the ITM Conference as delegates, we’re proud and excited to have the opportunity to now be involved in the planning of such a significant industry event.”

Progressive Changes & Upgrades Contribute to SECC Success

Progressive Changes & Upgrades Contribute to SECC Success Exhibition NewsThe Scottish Conference + Exhibition Centre (SECC) last week announced pre-tax profits of £1.4m, with a 9% year-on-year increase in turnover to £29.5m. As it prepares to open its brand new SSE Hydro Arena later this year, it is also looking ahead to playing a major role in the 2014 Commonwealth Games, one of the world’s biggest sporting events.

In the current climate, maintaining a healthy portfolio of events can be a difficult task, not least due to the requirements of both client and visitor.

Exhibition Industry News caught up with Sales Director Ben Goedegebuure to find out what they’ve been doing to establish such a positive looking future for the venue.

Strong exhibition revenues have contributed to the figures reported last week, which after a tough few years suggests that the SECC has perhaps changed the way it supports them, something we put to Ben.

“Not in the short term. However, as a very general note, it has changed over the last decade or so.  We’re much closer to the clients now through both funding support and planning support.  We have also developed a very close relationship with the city marketing bureau so that we stay fully up to date with any opportunities.  There are different ways of working nowadays and you need to be a lot closer to your customers and become more deeply involved with the events and their requirements.  It’s not been an overnight change, but a recognition that, over time, we had to adapt and be more interactive with the events we are hosting.”

In order to work in tandem with their clients, their evolution has included a re-thinking of how the venue allocates support staff to any given event, as Ben explains.

“In the past, venues like ours would allocate staff to manage and support individual events.  They could be working on a trade exhibition one week, a medical conference the following week and then on to a live music concert.  What we now have are staff that specialise purely in these particular areas and who understand the needs of those types of event.  This means that our clients are getting a far more knowledgeable service, delivering their goals more efficiently and helping to establish long-term sustainability.”

Ongoing Improvements

The venue has made continual updates to its visitor experience, something that plays a crucial part in the success of the events.  When the SECC Hydro opens in September it will feature state of the art digital signage, and visitors will be welcomed to the SECC complex by the sight of a brand new restaurant. Major improvements have also been carried out on the sites’ visitor Wi-Fi as well as gradual improvements to the exhibition halls.

“In the modern world, visitors to venues like this carry with them very specific expectations, especially those attending trade and business events. To be successful and to ensure the events that we host are successful, it is vital we meet and exceed those expectations.”

The venue will undergo further changes for next years Commonwealth Games when temporary structures are built on the site to host key facilities like the international broadcast and media centres.  Billed as the SECC Precinct, the venue will form the major visitor hub for the games, playing a significant role in the long-term regeneration plans for the Clyde Riverside.

“The excitement for the games is already building”, said Ben.  “For the people of Glasgow, the surrounding areas and, in many respects, the whole of Scotland, the Commonwealth Games will be a far bigger deal than the Olympics, simply because they will be more accessible to them.”

Events industry Golf Day raises £5500 for charities.

In the Rough, the Event Industry Charity Golf Day sponsored this year by the NEC and held at the Forest of Arden Championship course near Birmingham, has raised £5500 which will be shared between Great Ormond Street Hospital and Events for Namuwongo.

Despite an early morning of torrential rain and thunderstorms, 76 golfers set out for a delayed shotgun start. With a full complement of Tee sponsors and competitions on many of the holes the clouds parted at the start of what was to be a sunny, warm and very enjoyable event, culminating in 100 players and guests sitting down to dinner.

The day was organised by ESSA with support from its In the Rough strategy group containing representatives from ESSA, AEV and AEO. These were Luke Facey of Alfa Displays, Graham Stephenson of the BDC and Paul MacDonald from Centaur, respectively.

There were inspirational speeches from the charity guests, a variety of fundraising initiatives and a late night casino.

ESSA director Chris Skeith said, “Thunder and lightning are not usually conducive to a day’s golf, however, all of the players battled through to reach the course and after the briefing we were greeted with the sun breaking through for a fantastic day. We had representatives from all parts of the industry – contractors, venues and organisers and a sponsor for every tee which I believe is unprecedented.”
